![]() ![]() Additionally, GPS systems have problems functioning properly in heavily wooded areas. Although they have increased the speed of surveying, GPS systems are only horizontally accurate to 20mm and vertically accurate to about 30mm. That said, GPS systems are not always as accurate as the surveyor would wish. In a short period of time, total stations have gone from being mechanical/electronic devices to purely electronic systems with on-board computer and software.Īs Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have gained widespread use in the private sector, they have also predictably entered the arena of land surveying. More recently, modern electronics have improved on the theodolite with the addition of an electronic distance measurement device, or EDM these tools are referred to as total stations. ![]() More sophisticated versions of theodolites were still being used as late as the 1990’s for simple surveys, along with other equipment to improve the accuracy. However, because of the theodolite’s bulk, the surveyor’s compass was still used in heavily wooded areas, leading to its resurgence in popularity during the Colonial period in the United States. Because of the greater accuracy, the theodolite was the preferred tool for surveyors throughout Europe by the early 1800s. A theodolite could measure both horizontal and vertical angles. It was used to measure horizontal angles. The surveyor’s compass, or circumferentor, consisted of a brass circle and an index on the circle was a compass. Leaps and bounds in accuracy in surveying were made with the introduction of such equipment as the surveyor’s compass and theodolite. These chains would be pulled taut, and attempts were made to hold the measure level in order to improve accuracy. In its earliest forms, one of the main tools for conducting land surveys was a chain (sometimes known as a Gunter’s chain) of a specific length. We are at the dawn of a new era, however, and surveying technology that went virtually unchanged for hundreds of years is now being introduced to the computer age, which has served to only make our surveying estimations even more accurate than before. Many surveying tools in use today are similar to those that were employed to map and survey the initial settlements of the United States. While the use of such tools were all but lost in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance saw a resurgence in interest and need in tools to survey and parcel the land around them. ![]() For example, assembly vs C of the SkipSpace function (clickable): Mostly, the original code is slimmer and looks more optimized. It’s interesting to compare manually written assembly code with code generated by a compiler. I had to fix a couple of things manually, but after some tweaking, it actually worked! And after some more tweaks for 64-bit portability (mainly adjusting pointer vs integer types and pointer size constants), the compiled 64-bit library worked as well! Obviously, the code didn’t work right away. I was actually surprised that it was able to compile. Due to the fact that there’s no type correctness in assembly, GCC displayed more than 1,000 warnings, most of which complain about incompatibility of types. After some tweaking, I could get the code to compile. Then, I wrote a script which uses regular expression search/replace to translate every line of assembly to C. I had to manually change some of the exotic stuff (such as usage of the CARRY flag), but most of the code was ready for automatic translation. Most assembly commands can be translated to C as well. if/.while extensively, which can be easily translated to C. But I came up with a more creative idea: to port it to C first! After all, C is considered by some as a portable assembly. Perhaps it was possible to port the codebase to 64-bit MASM using macros and such. ![]() But how do I port an assembly codebase from 32-bit to 64-bit? I’m not familiar with MASM syntax, which the codebase uses. ![]() Also, I didn’t like the second option, so I’ve decided to port RAEdit. I looked for an alternative, but didn’t find a decent one. running the editor window as a separate 32-bit process. Finding an alternative editor component. While it’s somewhat similar to 64-bit x86 assembly, there’s no way to automatically port an assembly codebase from 32-bit to 64-bit. After porting the 32-bit version of the plugin, I realized that there’s a problem porting it to 64-bit: the RAEdit component is written in 32-bit x86 assembly. Recently, I’ve been working on a port of Multiline Ultimate Assembler for the 圆4_dbg debugger. It’s a great component, lightweight and simple to use. In the Multiline Ultimate Assembler plugin for OllyDbg, I use an editor component called RAEdit, written by KetilO in 32-bit x86 assembly. ![]() Tinytopia offers real(ish) cities to play in too. If you place one wrong and it teeters over, it basically looks like a lightweight plastic house fell over. And that carries over from just the visuals. Instead they all have a more cartoony look to them. Tinytopia’s buildings aren’t overly realistic. ![]() With levels set up like action figure or toy car playsets though, you might have an idea of what we’re about to cover already. While I’ve already said a few things about Tinytopia’s looks, it’s worth talking about in a bit more depth. That same gimmick runs across almost all of the common buildings in the game, whether it’s businesses, houses, or police stations. Or you can clump 4 of the buildings up and have a superstore. Or you can add another store next to it and build it into an even bigger structure. And you can place that, and have yourself a small shop. And I mean that as in they’re stacked up on top of one another. The biggest that comes to mind is the way that larger buildings are put together. And as mentioned, there are disasters as well, including alien invasion and a wind-up, familiar looking giant lizard.īut while a good deal of the game will feel familiar, there are also a few things in Tinytopia that are pretty unique. You’ll have to deal with hitting certain marks, placing special structures, and more. Sending out fire trucks is not automatic, so make sure you see to it ASAP!īut the series of ‘stages’ that Tinytopia offers will put more challenges than that in front of you. And don’t forget the power plants and roads, because your citizens won’t. That includes the aforementioned planning things out, like business placement and emergency services. There’s actually a good deal of stuff for you to tweak and that you need to pay attention to as you build and contend with different boards specific challenges. I could see though, that if you like that sort of thing and love managing every little element, that might be an issue.īut, all of that said, while Tinytopia doesn’t do anytngi radically different, it isn’t exactly devoid of detail either. So I’ve hinted at this above, but Tinytopia doesn’t get completely lost in the little details of what you might find in some city-builders. You likely won’t get that from this game though. And when it starts to feel more like work than play, that’s a problem. With Tinytopia though, it feels a bit more streamlined than usual, something that I really enjoyed since I tend to get lost in the details of these games at times. Tinytopia throws disasters at you too, including some fantastical ones.īottom line if you have played a game like this before, you know what to expect. You’ll have to keep your citizens happy, working, and with access to shopping, power, police, and fire stations. That said though, this is a city-builder with many of the things that that genre dictates. It’s got the aesthetic of a non-violent Toy Soldiers, if that makes sense. The cities that you’ll work on are all built on a foundation of stuff like wooden floors, tabletops, and even teeter-totters (kinda). Yep, hinge-joints all, your city-adviser pops up to walk you through the basics of your town, and delivers hints here and there.īut that’s just the tip of the iceberg in terms of exploiting its premise. You’ll see that right off the bat, when Tinytopia introduces you to your adviser, who’s an action figure. And the look of it, while cute, adds a terrifically fun flavor. There’s actually a ton happening in it to keep you busy. Yes, Tinytopia is all about toy cities, but don’t get the idea that it’s an overly simple game. Not to mention, it’s also relaxing as all get out. While there might not be all the minutia and micro-management as some other titles in the genre too, it’s a ton of fun. But it’s a lot more than that, which is mainly due to the incredibly fun idea behind Tinytopia. Cities that weren’t quite on the scale of a mega-city.Īnd in that regard, I was somewhat correct. At first glance, I thought it was a city-builder that focused on smaller burghs, like towns etc. I must admit, I had the wrong idea of what Tinytopia actually was. ![]() Mastiff’s latest builds a tiny little ‘topia, with toy-sensibilities, and if you’re looking for some stress-free fun, this is it. ![]() So now everyone can enjoy their favorite cookie without the guilt of all those calories!
